Spotlight on Will Howard

When Will Howard started work as an intern/trainer at Wellness Box in May 2018, he had no idea that participating in TRX workouts would actually make him a stronger runner. But after just one month, he saw a big improvement in his ability.

Will was a member of the Indiana State University track team for two years, and also coached track at Terre Haute South High School. He specialized in pole vaults and jumps. Before joining Wellness Box, his exercise consisted mainly of cardiovascular activity. At Wellness Box, Will learned the art of Total Body Resistance (TRX), which is suspension-based exercise that focuses on speed, agility, endurance and body resistance. He knew his mobility and flexibility would likely improve. But he was not prepared for what TRX would do to improve his running.

After just one month of TRX training, Will ran a 1-mile fun run in downtown Terre Haute. He finished with his fastest mile time ever, at approximately 6:01. As he continued doing TRX, his mileage increased.

Before TRX and Wellness Box, the most Will had run was two miles. He later saw his mileage and times improve, and got himself to a total of eight miles ran. In May 2019, he participated in the Indy Mini Half Marathon in downtown Indianapolis. At that race - Will’s first half marathon ever - he ran the entire 13.1 miles in 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Will’s improvements did not stop with road running. In the spring, he did jumps in an open track meet and jumped the best he had in years with a shorter approach. And this was after three years of not competing in or practicing jumps. The only workouts Will did were TRX classes at Wellness Box.

Will credits Wellness Box for making him stronger and improving his running ability. Additionally, he also saw his body fat composition decrease. When he started work at Wellness Box, he was at a 12% body fat composition. After just two months of TRX workouts (the only change he made in his health), Will’s composition dropped to 9%.

He encourages others runners to work with Wellness Box to improve their running. “If you add [Wellness Box workouts], you work stability muscles you’re not using when you run,” he said. “You won’t put a toll on your body and it will help you get stronger, faster, more flexible and mobile.”
